High intensity interval training or HIIT is an intense activity workout for a fixed period of time with rest in-between rounds. Think maximum effort for a short period of time. Rest and repeat.
The great thing about HIIT training is you don’t have to go to the gym to workout. Make some space at home or in the garden and use your body as a weight. Think fast sprint, burpees or plyometric exercises like jumping squats or knee tuck jumps.
By pushing into the anaerobic zone you are increasing both your cardiovascular fitness levels as well as building muscle and burning fat.
HIIT training is a great way to burn fat without burning away that hard earned muscle. It also burns more calories after a workout than steady state aerobic training.
The time spent working out will also be shortened as you can get the same results in about half the time of steady state training or low intensity workouts. You also burn calories after exercise which is an additional bonus!
