Fitmum Georgina Hannay - My Journey into Fitness

So who am I? My name is Georgie and I am a 30 year old single mum of one sharing my fitness tips, recipes and fitness and mumlife. I have had my fair share of setbacks and health issues along the way so this journey is particularly special to me given my background and what I have had to go through to get where I am today.

At the age of 24 I was diagnosed with cervical cancer, unexpected as you can imagine I dealt with this poorly and would sway from making jokes about dying to falling apart and refusing to leave the house. I had surgical treatment over a three month period to remove the tumour itself and then the remaining pre cancerous cells. In late 2010 I was then given the all clear.

My husband (at the time) and I were told that having a family was going to be very difficult. We persisted nevertheless and on the 1st January 2012 in complete disbelief, I found out I was pregnant.

I have always been a very fit, active and motivated person throughout childhood and my early twenties, so when at my 12 week scan the doctors made the decision to put a cervical stitch in to my cervix to prevent pre term labour and then put me on strict bed rest for the remainder of the pregnancy, I was at an absolute crossroad. My body or a baby? I obviously went for the latter option given my huge desire to be a mum but then as the months slowly went on I had to watch my former strong and toned body wither away to nothing with an ever growing bump.

By the time my daughter was born in September 2012 I was weak, far too skinny and had absolutely no energy, which was a tough point to start my breastfeeding journey. I persisted with this well in to my daughters first year but slowly as I adjusted to life as a mum (living with little to no sleep) that urge to get my body, strength and motivation back kicked in.

I started out by walking with baby in the buggy, slowly building up day by day and then moved on to watching YouTube videos sharing home fitness tips and finally purchasing some dumbbells to work out with.

Sadly my marriage didn’t last so when my daughter was three months old my husband and I separated and she started to spend time with him on her own. This was tough (as any mums will confirm) but the silver lining was that it gave me some more time to focus on myself and get working on my wobbly un toned body.

When my daughter was around six months old I joined a gym and with only going a few times a week and pairing it with home workouts, I started seeing results. Very slowly my energy levels were coming back and I started to feel more like myself again.

In March 2015 I decided to enter Women’s Health ‘The Body of 2015’ competition and somehow with my story and some photos I managed to reach the final ten. We went up to London for the judging day and still to my complete disbelief managed to get a place in the final five. We appeared on the cover of the magazine in September 2015 and then voting was down to the public. At this point I realised that actually though with low self esteem from previous events ‘I could do this and I had achieved something amazing’ I started blogging about all aspects of a ‘fit mum life’ food, recipes, home workout tips, ‘mumlife’, how to make it work, what gym kit to buy (the list goes on) This has gone from strength to strength over the last year and I have gained thousands of followers in mums, either at the beginning of their journey or in their fitness journey looking for motivation. Sadly I didn’t win the competition, but just reaching that final five from thousands of applicants gave me enough proof that I could potentially turn this in to an inspiration for others, so I did.

In January 2016 I started a Youtube channel ‘Fit Mum Club’ showcasing again all aspects of my life and in particular giving mums some tips about what they can do to exercise at home because not everyone has the time or the money to go to the gym in the fast paced world we live in.

To this day I still only train in the gym a maximum of 2/3 times a week and still will be found on most days in my spare bedroom balancing on a gym ball or making a make shift TRX out of rope.

Speaking from experience it is very easy to fall off the wagon after you have a baby because you almost become a completely different person, fitness does not need to be hard to accomplish and my aim now in life is to prove this to women. You can be a fitmum without a fancy gym and a personal trainer yelling at you. So the question now is, what’s stopping you?
